Irezumi only decorates herself in black and grey tattoos ~ therefore the new owner can add new tattoos to her flank but only black and grey. (and yes, her tattoos were in fact inspired by Kat Von D)

Irezumi had always wanted to be a tattoo artist ~ just like her uncle. Her earliest memories are of laying on the floor of his tattoo shop, scribbling away on scrap paper. She loved the hum of the machines, the colorful inks, and all the interesting ponies who visited the shop.

Her uncle noticed that she was quickly developing fantastic drawing skills. After speaking to Irezumi’s parents, she was allowed to become an apprentice. For many years all she did was clean, set up the artists’ tattoo stations, and greet customers. But when she wasn’t busy around the shop, her uncle let her observe the tattooing process.

After Irezumi had learned the ways of the tattoo industry, her uncle took her out to a farm and gave her a single needle machine. She was given the task of branding livestock.

Her hooves were shaky and the animals often uncooperative, but she was determined. After all, for the first time in her life she was actually tattooing!

As Irezumi practiced and learned, it occurred to her that she was a teenager and still didn’t have a cutie mark. But she didn’t care. She knew she was working hard towards what she wanted to do most. She spent her days at school, her afternoons practicing with her tattoo machine, and her nights drawing.

One day, after her uncle had scrutinized a tattoo branding, he smiled and told her she had earned her way back into the shop. This time, for her final exam. If she passed, she could begin tattooing real customers as an artist.

She went to the tattoo shop proudly. When she got there, she discovered that there was a mare waiting for her. Instantly Irezumi realized there was something…off…about this customer. She was about the same age as Irezumi, and surprisingly didn’t have a cutie mark either. But that wasn’t what felt odd. Suddenly it hit Irezumi: this mare was albino. And albino ponies never get cutie marks because their skin can’t change colors to reveal the mark.

Irezumi’s uncle told Irezumi that this was her final exam: to tattoo this pony and give her the cutie mark she would never have otherwise.

Both ponies were nervous, but Irezumi took a deep breath and conquered the tattoo cutie mark with all her heart, soul, and skills.

And the tattoo turned out beautifully.

The young mare burst into tears of joy when she saw her cutie mark for the first time. Irezumi was overcome with emotion and pride. At that moment her uncle tapped her on the shoulder and pointed to Irezumi’s flank. At last her long-overdue cutie mark revealed itself: a tattoo needle. She had officially graduated from apprentice to artist.
